Day 5: Fun in the Sun
by Guadalupe Torres

During the course of the week, I’ve been learning so many new things and meeting incredible people. I have had the chance to go on ships, visit a freezer, and practice my presentation skills. Due to all that has been happening this week, we have not been outside much. Even though the ocean is right next to Scripps, we still had not gotten the opportunity to go in. I come from Imperial Valley so going to the beach is really out of the ordinary. I was especially excited to go in because of how hot it gets at home. Today we finally got the chance to go to the beach to do some data collection. We first got a lecture about Congress 101 which will be very helpful for our trip to Washington D.C. this weekend.

After learning about Congress 101, two of our instructors, Kara and Maya, taught us about data collection and how to analyze different data, as well as teaching us about longshore currents. They also showed us amazing videos about the data collection we would be attempting at the beach later on. We learned about the height of the tides that were going to be occurring around the time we were out there. Once we got out to the beach I was so excited and cold because the water was around 60° Fahrenheit and that to me that was freezing cold. We split into groups and were trying to run trials to figure out what the longshore current was. The waves were really strong which would make our buckets, that we are measuring the sand level tip-off. We had to redo and start over many times, but it just felt like a fun science experiment to me.

Lupita, Chloe, and Whitney collecting data on sand erosion.
The highlight of my day was going to the beach afterward and talking to everyone about how their trials went. If they did actually collected data for the trials or if it was a fail due to the strong waves. Something that I realized today was that I'm making friends that I know have my best interest in mind. Some new friends of mine, Megan and Julia, taught me how to boogie board! Like I had mentioned earlier I come from Imperial Valley so I do not get the chance to swim at the beach and do things like boogie boarding. Having friends that take time and want you to be involved and are willing to offer you help when trying new things is awesome to me. I can not wait for the more new things that I will get to learn and new relationships I will build with all these incredible people.
